Uber really upset me last Sunday. I had two failed attempts at an airport pick from LGA. It was 11pm, I had to get up early for work the next day, and I just wanted to get the ___ out of the airport.
First, I waited 20 minutes for a car that just wasn’t getting any closer — literally after 20minutes it still said he was 12 minutes away. I tried calling the guy. No answer. I cancelled the ride.
Then, when I tried to rebook another Uber (it autodefaults back to uberpool, so I select uberX again, enter my home address, and click book), the spinner has me waiting endlessly. I’m starting to question whether my rating has tanked and for some reason no one wants to pick me up. I give up.
I open the Lyft app and I feel a little dirty. I’m uberVIP. I’m totally cheating on uber right now.
I repeat the process — select a car (no car sharing), enter my address, and select to book. Ooh yay! Lyft drivers are shown to be only 3 minutes away. Ride accepted. My driver is 7 minutes away. Minutes later my phone rings and the driver tells me he is 6 minutes away. I wait as I see him repeat the same very slow progression as the first uber driver. Then after about 5 minutes, he cancels the ride.
By now it’s 11:30pm. I’ve been standing on the curb at terminal C passenger pickup 1 for 30 minutes. No one is here anymore. Can I please leave the airport!? Will anyone pick me up? Wait, no, I don’t want to end up in a ditch somewhere.
As panic starts to set in and I debate whether to rebook Lyft or uber, I see the Lyft app pop up a message — “Your driver cancelled. Reassigning a new driver now.” !! The new driver pops up and to my utter delight, the new guy is 1 minute away already in the airport terminal and coming around the corner. I will be saved!!
I almost cheer. A very simple product feature just gave me an amazing “surprise and delight” moment. No longer was I mad at Lyft for having a driver cancel my ride. And I have told multiple people about this amazing experience. And “how crazy that uber doesn’t do that? You have to go through all the steps again when a driver cancels on you.”
